What is an XML sitemap generator?
An XML sitemap generator is a tool that finds the pages on a website and writes them into sitemap.xml, the file search engines read to discover URLs. This generator crawls your site from the address you enter, renders JavaScript pages, follows internal links and respects robots.txt. You set changefreq, priority and lastmod, then download the file. A free account covers 50 URLs a day.
What the sitemap generator does
It visits your site the way a search crawler does, then turns the pages it finds into a sitemap file.
Crawls your site
Starts at the address you enter, follows internal links and respects robots.txt.
Renders JavaScript
Uses a real browser, so pages built with React, Vue, Angular or Next.js are discovered too.
Change frequency and priority
Pick a default changefreq and priority for every URL, and include or leave out lastmod dates.
Edit the URL list
Review the URLs found, adjust them, and the XML is rebuilt as you change it.
Download sitemap.xml
Copy the XML or download the file, ready to upload to your site root.
A free account generates one sitemap a day with up to 50 URLs. Larger sites need a paid plan.
How to create an XML sitemap
Crawl, review, export, then tell search engines where the file is.
Sign in and enter your website
Sign in with a free account and type your site's address, such as https://example.com.
Set the defaults
Choose a change frequency and priority for every URL, and whether to include lastmod dates.
Generate and watch the crawl
Click generate. The progress panel counts pages as the crawler finds them.
Review the URL list
Remove pages you don't want indexed, such as login, cart or thank-you pages, and any URL that doesn't load.
Download and submit
Download sitemap.xml, upload it to your site root, add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.
How to read the sitemap.xml file
Each page becomes one <url> entry inside a <urlset>. Only <loc> is required; the rest are hints.
<loc>
The full URL of the page. Use the same version (https, with or without www) as your canonical URLs.
<lastmod>
When the page last changed. The generator fills in the crawl date; replace it with real update dates if you have them.
<changefreq>
How often the page tends to change. Google ignores it; some other search engines may read it.
<priority>
Relative importance from 0.0 to 1.0 within your own site. Google ignores it too.
URLs discovered vs included
The crawl summary shows how many pages were found and how many made it into the file, and flags when the free 50-URL limit was reached.
Why your website needs an XML sitemap
Search engines find pages by following links. A sitemap gives them a list of the URLs you want crawled, which helps most on new sites, large sites, and pages with few internal links. It doesn't improve rankings directly, but a page has to be discovered and indexed before it can rank.
A sitemap also gives you a check: the Sitemaps report in Google Search Console shows how many of the submitted URLs are indexed, so you can spot pages Google is leaving out.
Which pages to include, and which to leave out
Include only canonical pages that return 200 and that you want in search results.
Leave out noindex pages, login and account pages, carts, checkouts and internal search results.
Leave out redirects, 404 pages and duplicate URLs with tracking parameters.
Keep each sitemap under 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed; larger sites split it and list the parts in a sitemap index.
Reference the sitemap from robots.txt with a full URL, and resubmit only when the structure changes.
Sitemaps and AI crawlers
AI search tools such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot build on crawled web pages, and their crawlers can read your robots.txt and sitemap like any other bot. A clean sitemap helps them find your pages; it doesn't make them cite you. For a curated list aimed at language models, add an llms.txt file as well.

What this sitemap generator doesn't do
A free account generates one sitemap a day with up to 50 URLs. Larger sites need a paid plan.
The crawl follows links up to three levels deep from the start page. Pages that nothing links to can't be found.
If the crawl finds fewer than five pages, the tool adds common routes such as /about or /contact. Check that they exist and delete any that don't.
lastmod is set to the crawl date for every page, not the date the page really changed.
It writes one sitemap file, not a sitemap index, and it doesn't host or submit the file for you.
AI crawlers can read sitemaps like other bots, so a current sitemap helps them find your pages. Whether an AI engine then uses or cites a page depends on the page itself, and on whether your robots.txt lets that crawler in. A sitemap is a discovery aid, not a ranking or citation signal.
What is the lastmod tag in a sitemap?
lastmod says when a page last changed in a meaningful way. Google uses it when it is consistently accurate and ignores it otherwise. This generator fills in the crawl date, so replace it with real update dates if your CMS has them, or leave lastmod out.
What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important URLs on your website in a machine-readable format. It tells Google and other search engines exactly which pages exist, when they were last updated, and their relative importance. Google treats sitemaps as a discovery hint — it does not guarantee crawling, but significantly improves crawl efficiency for complex sites.
Does having an XML sitemap improve Google rankings?
A sitemap is not a ranking factor and does not directly boost rankings. However, it ensures your important pages are discovered, crawled, and indexed — which is a prerequisite for ranking at all. Faster indexing means new content has a chance to appear in search results sooner.
How many URLs can a sitemap contain?
Each XML sitemap file supports up to 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50MB uncompressed. For larger sites, use a sitemap index file that references multiple sitemap files, each with up to 50,000 URLs.
Which pages should I exclude from my sitemap?
Exclude pages you do not want indexed: noindex pages, admin and login pages, duplicate or canonicalised content, URL-parameter duplicates, and any page blocked in robots.txt. Including non-indexable pages sends conflicting signals to Googlebot and wastes crawl capacity.
Do I need to resubmit my sitemap when I add new pages?
Not always. If your sitemap URL is already submitted in Google Search Console, Google periodically re-fetches it automatically. However, for time-sensitive new content like a product launch, manually requesting a re-crawl in Search Console speeds up discovery significantly.
Why do I need a sitemap?
A sitemap helps search engines find the pages you want crawled, especially new pages and pages with few internal links. It is not a ranking factor, but a page has to be discovered and indexed before it can rank.
Is the sitemap generator free?
Yes, our XML sitemap generator is free to use. Free users can generate one sitemap per day with up to 50 URLs. Upgrade for unlimited sitemaps and more URLs.
How does the website crawling work?
Our crawler starts at the address you enter, follows internal links up to three levels deep and respects robots.txt. It renders pages in a real browser, so links added by JavaScript frameworks are found too. If it finds fewer than five pages, it adds common routes such as /about, so check those exist before you publish the file.
Does it work with Single Page Applications (SPAs)?
Yes. The crawler renders pages in a real browser, so routes linked from React, Vue, Angular or Next.js apps are discovered. Routes that no link points to can't be found by crawling; add them to the list by hand before you download the file.
How do I submit my sitemap to search engines?
After generating your sitemap, upload it to your website's root directory and submit the URL to Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and other search engines.
Do I need an account to use the sitemap generator?
Yes. Crawling a site runs on our servers, so the generator asks you to sign in with a verified account. Signing up is free and includes the daily free sitemap.
More tools for crawling and indexing
Validate the sitemap, point crawlers to it, and audit what they find.
A sitemap tells crawlers where your pages are. AI Rank Lab's free audit checks whether those pages are ready for search engines and AI answers.
SEO, AEO and GEO audit
Paste a URL. The audit checks the page and the site files around it, robots.txt, sitemap.xml and llms.txt, and returns SEO, AEO and GEO scores with fixes ordered by impact.
