Key features of the HTTP status code checker

  • Final HTTP status code and status text for any URL
  • Success, Redirect, Client Error and Server Error labels
  • Final URL after redirects
  • Full list of response headers
  • Free, with no sign-up

How to use the HTTP status code checker

  1. Enter the URL

Paste the full address, including https://.

  2. Click Check Status

The tool requests the URL and follows any redirects.

  3. Read the status code

200 is fine; 4xx and 5xx need fixing; check the final URL if it changed.

  4. Review the headers

Look for x-robots-tag: noindex, caching rules and the content type.

  5. Trace redirects if needed

If the final URL changed, run the redirect chain checker to see every hop.

What is an HTTP status code checker?

An HTTP status checker requests a URL and shows the status code the server returns: 200 for OK, 3xx for redirects, 4xx for client errors such as 404 Not Found, and 5xx for server errors. This tool fetches the URL, follows any redirects, and shows the final status code and text, the final URL and every response header.

The result is labelled Success (2xx), Redirect (3xx), Client Error (4xx) or Server Error (5xx). If the final URL differs from the one you entered, the address redirected. The header list shows details such as content-type, cache-control, server, x-robots-tag and security headers.

Limits: because redirects are followed automatically, the status shown belongs to the final URL, and a 301 or 302 on the first URL appears only as a changed final URL. To see each hop and its code, use the redirect chain checker. The tool checks one URL at a time and waits up to 15 seconds, and some sites return 403 to automated requests even when the page works in a browser.

Why use an HTTP status code checker?

Status codes decide what search engines do with a URL: 200 pages can be indexed, 301s pass signals to the new address, 404s and 410s drop out of the index, and repeated 5xx errors slow crawling. Checking the code is the first step when a page disappears from search, a link breaks or a migration goes live.

What do HTTP status codes mean?

The first digit gives the class: 2xx success (200 OK), 3xx redirection (301 moved permanently, 302 found, 304 not modified), 4xx client errors (403 forbidden, 404 not found, 410 gone, 429 too many requests) and 5xx server errors (500 internal server error, 502 bad gateway, 503 service unavailable).

How do I check a page's status code?

Enter the URL here and click Check Status. In a browser, open DevTools, go to the Network tab, reload the page and read the Status column. On the command line, curl -I followed by the URL prints the status line and headers.

Does the tool show 301 and 302 redirects?

It follows redirects and shows where the URL ended up, so a redirect appears as a different final URL. To see the 301 or 302 code of each step, use the redirect chain checker.

What is the difference between a 301 and a 302 redirect?

A 301 says the move is permanent, so search engines transfer the old URL's signals to the new address and index it. A 302 (or 307) says it is temporary, so the original URL may stay indexed. Use 301 for migrations and changed URLs.

Why does a page work in my browser but return 403 here?

Some sites and firewalls block automated requests or unfamiliar user agents. The page may be fine for visitors, but make sure search engine crawlers aren't blocked too, using URL Inspection in Google Search Console.

What is a soft 404?

A soft 404 is a page that returns 200 but shows a "not found" message or almost no content. Search engines treat it like a 404. Fix it by returning a real 404 or 410 status, or by adding real content.

Can I check many URLs at once?

Not with this tool; it checks one URL per run. The broken link checker tests the links on a page, and the AI Rank Lab site audit crawls a whole site.
