What is an image format converter?

The Image Format Converter reads almost any image you have and saves it as one of the four formats the web and most apps use today: JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. It opens JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC and HEIF photos from iPhones, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG, ICO and Photoshop PSD files. Pick the output, and the tool decodes each file, draws it on a canvas and encodes it again, all inside your browser tab.

You control the result. A quality slider (10 to 100%) sets the trade-off between size and detail for JPG, WebP and AVIF. WebP also has a lossless mode for logos and screenshots. When the output is JPG, which has no transparency, you choose the colour that fills transparent areas. Optional max width and height scale large images down while keeping their proportions, and before you spend a run the tool shows the expected file size of your first image.

Some limits are worth knowing. Animated GIFs and WebPs become a still image of the first frame, multi-page TIFFs give the first page, and PSDs are converted from the flattened image Photoshop stores in the file, so layers are merged. Images above about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to fit the browser's canvas limit, and camera metadata such as EXIF date and GPS location is not copied to the new file. AVIF encoding is slow in a browser and can take several seconds per photo.

Why use an image format converter?

Format problems show up at the worst moment: an upload form that rejects HEIC, a CMS that won't take AVIF, a design file nobody else can open, a page that loads slowly because every image is a large PNG. Converting in the browser fixes that without installing software and without sending private photos or client files to someone else's server. One tool handles mixed batches, so a folder of iPhone photos, screenshots and old TIFF scans can all come out as the same format in one pass.

Something else? Ask the team

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Decoding and encoding happen in your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly, so the images never leave your device. The only thing sent to our server is a count of how many times the tool was used, so the daily free run can be applied.

Which format should I choose?

JPG is the safe choice for photos you will email or upload to forms, because every app opens it. PNG keeps every pixel and transparency, which suits screenshots and graphics but makes photos large. WebP gives smaller files than JPG at similar quality and keeps transparency; all current browsers show it. AVIF is usually smaller still, but it is slower to create and some older apps and editors can't open it.

Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos with this tool?

Yes. HEIC and HEIF photos open in any current browser through a decoder that loads the first time you convert one, which can take a few seconds. On an iPhone, choose the photos from the Files app if you want the original HEIC; some upload pickers hand the browser a JPEG copy instead.

Will converting reduce the quality of my image?

PNG and lossless WebP keep the pixels exactly. JPG, lossy WebP and AVIF compress the image, and the quality slider decides how much. At 80 to 90% most people can't see a difference from the original. Converting can't add back detail that an earlier JPG compression already removed.

Does it keep transparency?

PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparent areas. JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).

How many images can I convert at once, and how large can they be?

Up to 30 images per batch, each up to 60 MB. Images larger than about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to fit that limit, which phones and browsers impose on canvases. Very large batches convert one image at a time, so keep the tab open until the progress bar finishes.

What happens to animated GIFs, multi-page TIFFs and layered PSDs?

Only the first frame of an animated GIF or WebP and the first page of a TIFF are converted. PSD files are converted from the flattened preview Photoshop saves inside them, so every visible layer is merged into one image. If a PSD has no preview, re-save it in Photoshop with Maximize Compatibility turned on.

Is the image converter free?
