What is a Markdown to HTML converter?

A Markdown to HTML converter turns Markdown, the plain-text formatting used in README files, docs, chat apps and many CMSs, into HTML you can paste into a web page. Type or paste Markdown and this tool shows a live preview and the generated HTML code, which you can copy in one click. It runs in your browser.

It converts headings (# to ######), bold, italic and strikethrough (~~text~~), inline code and fenced code blocks, links and images, blockquotes, ordered and unordered lists, horizontal rules (---) and simple pipe tables. Code inside fences is escaped so it displays as text, and a language name after the opening fence becomes a language-* class that syntax highlighters such as Prism or highlight.js can use. Links open in a new tab with rel="noopener".

Limits: it is a lightweight converter, not a full CommonMark or GitHub Flavored Markdown implementation. Nested lists, task lists, footnotes and autolinks are not supported, and underscores inside words (snake_case) can turn into italics, so check the preview. The HTML has no CSS, so your site's stylesheet decides how it looks. Raw HTML in your Markdown passes through unchanged, so only convert text you trust.

How do I convert Markdown to HTML?

Paste the Markdown into the converter; the HTML is generated as you type, and you copy it from the HTML tab. In code, libraries such as marked or markdown-it (JavaScript) and Python-Markdown do the same job, and pandoc converts whole files from the command line.

What is the difference between Markdown and HTML?

Markdown is shorthand: # Title, **bold**, [link](url). HTML is the markup browsers render: <h1>, <strong>, <a href>. Markdown is quicker to write and HTML gives full control, and every Markdown converter outputs HTML.

Is MD to HTML the same as Markdown to HTML?

Yes. .md is the file extension for Markdown files, so MD to HTML and Markdown to HTML mean the same conversion.

Is "markup to HTML" the same thing?

Usually people mean Markdown. HTML is itself a markup language, so "markup to HTML" has no single meaning; if your text uses #, ** and [text](url), it is Markdown and this tool converts it.

Does it support GitHub Flavored Markdown?

Partly. It handles fenced code blocks, strikethrough and simple tables, which come from GitHub Flavored Markdown, but not task lists, autolinks, footnotes or nested lists. For full GFM, use a library such as markdown-it with plugins.

Is the HTML safe to publish?

The converter doesn't sanitise HTML, so any raw HTML or script in your Markdown passes through. Only convert content you wrote or trust, and sanitise user-submitted Markdown on your server.
