Redirect Chain CheckerGratisTechnical SEOChecks a live URL

Enter a public URL. We fetch the live page and analyse what search engines and AI crawlers see.

Key features of the redirect chain checker

  • Traces complete redirect chain from original URL to final destination
  • Shows HTTP status code (301, 302, 307, 308) at each redirect hop
  • Detects redirect loops (A → B → A) that cause infinite loops
  • Measures response time at each redirect hop
  • Highlights the final landing URL and its status

How to use the redirect chain checker

  1. Enter the URL

Paste the URL you want to trace into the redirect chain checker.

  2. Trace the chain

Click 'Trace Redirects' to follow all redirects from the original URL to the final destination.

  3. Review each hop

See each URL in the chain with its status code and the time taken for each redirect.

  4. Identify issues

Look for redirect loops, temporary (302) redirects that should be permanent, or chains longer than 2 hops.

  5. Consolidate redirects

Update redirect rules to point directly to the final destination URL, eliminating intermediate hops.

What is a redirect chain checker?

The Redirect Chain Checker traces the complete redirect path of any URL, showing each hop from the original URL to the final destination. It identifies the HTTP status code at each step, reveals redirect loops, and measures the total length of the chain — helping you identify and eliminate unnecessary redirects.

Each redirect in a chain introduces latency, slows page loading, and slightly reduces link equity transfer. Google has confirmed that redirect chains waste crawl budget and can slow down the indexation of your content. Ideally, any URL should redirect to its final destination in a single hop.

Why use a redirect chain checker?

Redirect chains often accumulate over time without notice — from HTTPS migrations, CMS changes, and URL restructures. A URL that went through three migrations may now trigger four consecutive redirects, adding hundreds of milliseconds to load time and leaking link equity at each step.

What is a redirect chain?

A redirect chain occurs when multiple redirects link together: URL A redirects to B, which redirects to C, which redirects to D. Each hop is a separate HTTP request, adding latency and complexity.

How many redirects are too many?

Ideally, any URL should reach its destination in 1 redirect. More than 2 hops is worth fixing. Google's crawler may give up on chains longer than 5 hops, leaving the final URL uncrawled.

Do redirect chains affect PageRank?

Each redirect hop has historically been thought to cause a small loss in link equity (PageRank). Google has confirmed that excessive redirect chains can reduce the amount of link equity passed to the final URL.

What is a redirect loop?

A redirect loop is when URL A redirects to URL B, which redirects back to URL A — creating an infinite cycle. Browsers and crawlers will give up after a set number of hops, showing an error page.

What is the difference between 301 and 302 redirects?

301 is a permanent redirect — it tells Google the page has moved for good and passes link equity. 302 is temporary — Google treats the original URL as the canonical and may not pass full link equity to the destination.
