How to use the Twitter (X) card checker

  1. Enter the URL

Paste the address of the page you plan to share.

  2. Run the check

The tool fetches the page and reads its Twitter and Open Graph tags.

  3. Read the preview

Check the title, description and image in the card preview.

  4. Fix missing tags

Add any missing tags to the page's <head>: at minimum twitter:card, plus a title, description and image (Twitter or Open Graph).

  5. Re-check and share

Run the check again, then paste the link into the X composer to see the live card before you post.

What is a Twitter (X) card checker?

A Twitter card checker, often called an X card validator, reads the meta tags that control how a link looks when it is posted on X. Enter a URL and this tool fetches the page, shows a preview of the card and checks the four core tags: twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image.

Each tag is marked present or missing, with its value. The preview uses the Twitter tags first and falls back to og:title and og:description when they are missing, which is also what X does. twitter:card sets the layout: summary shows a small square image beside the title, and summary_large_image shows a wide image above it.

Limits: the preview approximates X's layout. X caches cards, crops images its own way, and may not show a card if the image is blocked or too large. The tool reads the HTML before JavaScript runs, so tags added by JavaScript are not seen, and X's crawler doesn't run JavaScript either.

Why use a Twitter (X) card checker?

X's own Card Validator no longer shows a card preview, so checking the tags first is the easiest way to avoid posts that show a bare link, no image or the wrong title. Those posts get fewer clicks than a full card.

Does X still have a Card Validator?

X's Card Validator no longer shows a card preview. To see a card before you post, use a checker like this one, or paste the link into the X composer, which shows the card once X has fetched the page.

Which tags does a Twitter card need?

twitter:card is needed to choose the layout (summary or summary_large_image). The title, description and image can come from twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image, or from the matching og: tags when the Twitter ones are missing.

What image size works for a summary_large_image card?

Use an image with a 2:1 ratio, such as 1200×600 px (at least 300×157), under 5 MB, in JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF format. For the summary card, use a square image of at least 144×144 px.

Why isn't my card updating on X?

X caches card data for about a week. After fixing the tags, older posts may keep the old card; sharing the URL with a query string such as ?v=2 makes X fetch it as a new link.

Is a Twitter card the same as Open Graph?

They do the same job for different platforms. Open Graph (og:) tags are read by Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and others; X reads twitter: tags first and falls back to og: tags. Most sites set both.
