What is AI referral traffic?
AI referral traffic is visits that reach your site from a link in an AI assistant's answer, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Copilot. GA4 records these visits but files them under Referral, or under Direct when no referrer is passed. To see them as one number, add an AI channel group or build an exploration filtered on session source. AI referral tracking per page
GA4 hides most AI visits
GA4 does record clicks from AI assistants. It files them under Referral or Direct, mixed in with everything else, so nobody can say how much traffic AI sends you.
Buried in Referral
A click from chatgpt.com lands in the default Referral channel next to forums and partner sites. Unless you add a channel for AI assistants, AI traffic doesn't show as its own line.
Lost to Direct
Some AI apps and in-app browsers don't pass a referrer. Those visits arrive as (direct) / (none), so any referrer-based count is a floor, not the full number.
Tagged, not referred
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links it shows. A report that only checks the referrer misses those visits; one built on session source catches them.
Questions you can ask your GA4 data
Connect GA4 and ask in plain English. Analytics chat plans the GA4 query, runs it on your property and answers with the numbers.

Set it up in four steps
GA4 first, because it is your system of record. AI Rank Lab adds the page-level view and the citation context.
In GA4 Admin, open Data display, then Channel groups. Copy the default group, add a channel whose session source matches a regex for the AI assistants, and move it above Referral so GA4 assigns those sessions to it first.
Paste one script tag, or switch on the visibility tracker in the WordPress plugin. It stores each visit's referrer and UTM parameters, flags AI assistant referrals and shows them per page.

Compare and report
Put the AI channel in GA4 next to the tag's per-page view, ask analytics chat the follow-up questions, and tie the visits back to the prompts where your pages are cited.
Four parts of AI Rank Lab do the work. Each has its own page with the details.
AI bot tracking
A lightweight JavaScript tag records visits whose referrer is an AI assistant, with the landing page, country and UTM parameters, and reports them per page and per assistant.
Referrer and UTMstored with every visit. Crawlers that don't run JavaScript aren't counted.
GA4 integration
Connect one or more GA4 properties over Google OAuth with read-only access. The same connection feeds analytics chat, the GA4 Mastery analyses, Autopilot and the MCP connector for Claude.

Citations behind the clicks
Traffic is the end of the chain. Brand visibility and citation analytics show which prompts mention you and which of your URLs AI engines cite, so you can see why an assistant sends visits.
Mentions, position and cited URLs per engine
Opted-in prompts re-checked weekly by the citation tracker
Prompts where your URLs are cited. When citations rise and AI visits don't, look at the cited pages.
54%
of AI-referred page views on sites running our tag came from ChatGPT. Gemini was next with 19%.3,906 page-view events whose referrer is an AI assistant, recorded by the AI Rank Lab JS tag on 31 sites, July 2025 to November 2026. Page views, not unique users. DuckDuckGo excluded.
5,656
page views carried utm_source=chatgpt.com, against 2,125 with a ChatGPT referrer.Same tag data and window: 35 sites had utm_source=chatgpt.com visits, 29 had ChatGPT referrer visits. One page view can carry both, so do not add the two counts.
What GA4 and the tag can't see
Report AI traffic as a floor, and say so next to the number.
Visits with no referrer
Some AI apps, in-app browsers and copied links pass no referrer. GA4 files those visits as (direct) / (none), and no tool can reliably attribute them.
Clicks from Google AI Overviews arrive as google / organic, so GA4 can't separate them from ordinary results. Use the AI Overview tracker to see which queries cite you.
The tag sees JavaScript visits
The AI Rank Lab tag runs in the browser. It records AI-referred people and agents that run JavaScript, not crawlers such as GPTBot; those appear in server logs.
The GA4 setup is yours
The connection is read-only, so AI Rank Lab can't create the channel group for you. You need an Editor or Administrator role on the property to add it.
Create a custom channel group in GA4 (Admin, Data display, Channel groups), add a channel whose session source matches a regex such as chatgpt\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com, and place it above Referral. You can also build an exploration filtered on session source. AI Rank Lab adds a per-page view from its own tag and lets you ask GA4 follow-up questions in plain English.
What source does ChatGPT traffic show in GA4?
Usually chatgpt.com (older visits may show chat.openai.com), either as the referrer or through utm_source=chatgpt.com. Perplexity shows as perplexity.ai, Gemini as gemini.google.com, Claude as claude.ai and Copilot as copilot.microsoft.com.
Why does some AI traffic show as Direct in GA4?
Some AI apps, in-app browsers and copied links don't pass a referrer. GA4 then records the visit as (direct) / (none). No tool can recover those visits reliably, so treat your AI channel as a floor and say so in reports.
Which AI search rank tracker integrates with GA4?
AI Rank Lab connects GA4 in the same account as brand visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, so the prompts that cite you and the visits they send sit side by side.
Can I see Google AI Overviews traffic separately in GA4?
Not reliably. Clicks from AI Overviews arrive as google / organic, the same as ordinary results. Use the AI Overview tracker to see which queries show an AI Overview and whether it cites your pages.
What access do I need to add the AI channel group?
An Editor or Administrator role on the GA4 property. The default channel group can't be edited, so you copy it and add the AI channel to the copy, above Referral.
Does AI Rank Lab change my GA4 property?
No. The connection uses Google's read-only analytics scope. You create the AI channel group in GA4 yourself; AI Rank Lab reads the data and never writes to the property.
Does the tag track AI crawlers like GPTBot?
Mostly not. The tag runs in the browser, and most AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript, so it records AI-referred people and JavaScript-capable agents. Crawler hits show up in your server logs.
What does it cost?
Tag tracking uses 1 credit per 100 tracked requests and analytics chat uses 20 credits per message. Signup includes 100 free credits with no card; paid plans start at $69 a month with 10,000 credits.
