What is a word and character counter?
A word and character counter is a tool that counts the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in a piece of text. Paste or type into this free counter and every number updates as you write, including characters with and without spaces, reading time at 200 words a minute and speaking time at 150. The text stays in your browser.
What the counter measures
Every number updates on each keystroke, so you can write to a limit instead of checking afterwards.
Words
Any run of characters between spaces or line breaks counts as one word.
Characters, with and without spaces
Both counts side by side, for limits that include spaces (posts, meta descriptions) and limits that don't.
Sentences and paragraphs
Sentences end at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
Reading time
Words divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up to the next minute.
Speaking time
Words divided by 150 words per minute, a steady pace for talks, videos and podcasts.
Unique words and average length
How many different words you used, and their average length in characters.
Longest word
The longest word in the text, after punctuation is removed.
Your most repeated words of three letters or more, a quick keyword-density check.
How to count words and characters
Five steps, from pasting your draft to hitting the length you need.
Paste or type your text
Paste a draft, an essay, a social post or a meta description into the text box, or start typing.
Read the counts
Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs update on every keystroke.
Check against your limit
Compare the right count with your target: characters for posts and meta descriptions, words for essays and articles.
Edit to fit
Trim or add text and watch the numbers change, so you stop exactly at the limit.
Review word use, then copy or download
Check unique words and the most common words for repetition, then copy the text or download it as a .txt file.
How to read the counts
Each number answers a different limit, so pick the one your platform or brief uses.
Characters (with spaces)
Every character, including spaces and line breaks. Most social networks and meta-description guides count this way.
Characters (no spaces)
Letters, digits and punctuation only. Some forms, translation quotes and academic briefs use this count.
Words
Runs of characters between spaces or line breaks. Hyphenated words and numbers count as one word each.
Sentences and paragraphs
Sentences end at . ! or ?, so abbreviations like e.g. can add extra sentences. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
Reading and speaking time
Words divided by 200 (reading) or 150 (speaking) words per minute, rounded up. Treat them as estimates.
Most common words
Repeated words of three letters or more. If one term dominates, vary the wording or check keyword density.
Word count vs character count
Word limits are common for essays, articles and applications. Character limits are common for social posts, ad copy, SMS and search snippets, where the space on screen is fixed. Because character limits often include spaces, the counter shows both versions side by side.
Search snippets are measured in pixels, not characters, so a character count is a guide rather than a guarantee. Many SEO guides keep meta descriptions to about 150 to 160 characters and titles to about 50 to 60.
How many words is 2,000 characters?
In English, roughly 300 to 400 words. An average English word is a little under five letters, plus a space, so 2,000 characters with spaces is about 350 words. Text with long technical words comes out lower; conversational text with short words comes out higher.
Going the other way, 1,000 words is usually 5,500 to 6,500 characters with spaces. Paste your own text to get the exact figure, because the ratio changes with the writing.
Does word count matter for SEO?
Word count is not a ranking factor. A page ranks when it answers the searcher's question well, and some answers need 300 words while others need 3,000. Use the count to meet a brief or to compare your draft with the pages that already rank, not as a target on its own.

What this word counter doesn't do
It counts by spaces and punctuation, so languages written without spaces between words (such as Chinese, Japanese or Thai) won't get an accurate word count.
Sentence counts can be off for abbreviations (e.g., Dr.) and decimal numbers, which contain full stops.
Reading and speaking times use fixed speeds (200 and 150 words per minute); real speed depends on the reader and the text.
It doesn't check grammar, spelling or readability. Use the readability checker for reading grade.
Word processors may count slightly differently (for example, around dashes or URLs).
The counter divides the word count by 200 words per minute and rounds up to the next minute. Many adults read plain text a little faster than that, and dense technical text more slowly, so treat it as an estimate.
How is speaking time different from reading time?
Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a steady pace for talks, videos and podcasts, so the same text takes longer to say than to read. A 1,500-word script comes out at 10 minutes.
What is the ideal blog post word count for SEO?
There isn't one. Google doesn't rank pages by length; it ranks the page that answers the query best. Look at the pages that rank for your topic to see how much depth the question needs, cover it fully, and stop. Padding a post to hit a number doesn't help.
What is the character limit for a meta description?
There is no fixed limit. Google cuts snippets by pixel width, which on desktop is usually around 150 to 160 characters. Keep the key message in the first 120 characters so it survives on mobile, and use the counter to check the length as you write.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Character count with spaces includes every character including spaces between words. Without spaces counts only non-space characters. Twitter counts spaces toward its 280-character limit; some other platforms do not. The tool shows both counts so you can apply whichever is relevant to your platform.
Does word count directly affect SEO rankings?
Word count is not a direct ranking factor. But longer content tends to cover topics more comprehensively, earn more backlinks, and rank for more keyword variations. The correlation between content length and rankings exists because depth of topical coverage — not raw word count — is what Google rewards with better positions.
How many words are on one page of text?
A standard double-spaced page (12pt font, 1-inch margins) contains approximately 250-300 words. Single-spaced at the same settings holds approximately 500-600 words. Most academic style guides define one page as 250 words double-spaced, so a 2,000-word essay is approximately 8 pages.
How does the word counter tool work?
The word counter analyzes your text as you type, counting words, characters, sentences and paragraphs. It also estimates reading and speaking time and lists unique words, average word length, the longest word and the most common words.
Is the word counter tool free to use?
Yes, our word counter and character counter tool is completely free to use. No registration or payment required.
What statistics does the tool provide?
The tool provides character count (with and without spaces), word count, sentence count, paragraph count, reading time, speaking time, unique words, average word length, longest word, and most common words.
Can I download my text analysis?
Yes, you can download your text as a .txt file, copy it to clipboard, or clear the text area as needed.
How many words is 2,000 characters?
About 300 to 400 words. An average English word is around 4.7 letters, or about 5.7 characters once you add the space after it, so 2,000 characters is roughly 350 words. Paste your text into the counter to get the exact number for your writing.
How many characters is 2,000 words?
Roughly 11,000 to 12,000 characters with spaces, and around 9,500 without. The counter shows both numbers for your own text.
Is this word count checker free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser, so the text you paste is not uploaded or stored.
