What is a meta title and description checker?

A meta title and description checker reads the <title> tag and the meta description of a page and tells you whether they are a good length for search results. Enter a URL and this tool fetches the page, shows a desktop search-result preview, counts characters, estimates pixel width, and lists the page's Open Graph tags.

Titles of 30–60 characters are marked as a good length; shorter is marked Too short and longer Too long. Descriptions of 120–160 characters are marked good. The pixel figure is an estimate from average character width (about 7.6 px per title character and 5.6 px per description character), because Google cuts snippets by pixel width rather than by characters: roughly 600 px for a desktop title. The Open Graph section shows og:title, og:description, og:image and og:type, which control how the link looks when it is shared on social networks and in chat apps.

Limits: Google often rewrites titles and descriptions, so the preview shows what your tags say, not a guarantee of what Google will display. The check reads the HTML before JavaScript runs, one URL at a time.

Why use a meta title and description checker?

The title is the link people click and one of the strongest relevance signals on a page; the description is the snippet underneath. A title cut off mid-word or a missing description wastes the one line that persuades someone to choose your result.

Meta title and description checker: frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask the team

How long should a meta title be?

Aim for 50–60 characters, or under about 600 pixels. Google cuts longer titles with an ellipsis on desktop. This checker marks 30–60 characters as a good length.

How long should a meta description be?

Keep it to roughly 120–160 characters. Google truncates by pixel width and sometimes shows a little more on mobile, so put the important part in the first 120 characters.

Why does Google show a different title or description from mine?

Google rewrites titles and snippets when it thinks other text on the page matches the search better, or when the tags are missing, too long or stuffed with keywords. A clear, accurate title that matches the page's H1 is rewritten less often.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

No. Google has said the meta description is not a ranking factor. It does affect how many people click your result, which is why it is worth writing well.

What is pixel width and why does it matter?

Search results have a fixed width, so Google truncates by pixels, not characters. Wide letters such as W and M take more space than i or l, so two 60-character titles can be cut at different points. This checker estimates the width from the character count, which is close enough to catch titles that are clearly too long.

How do I check the meta tags of any website?

Paste the URL into the checker. It works on any public page, including competitors' pages, so you can compare how the other results for your keyword write their titles and descriptions.

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image) set the title, text and image shown when a link is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and many other apps. X (Twitter) falls back to them when Twitter card tags are missing.
