SHA256 Hash Generator

Generate SHA-256 cryptographic hash from any text using the Web Crypto API.

SHA256 Hash GeneratorGratisText UtilitiesRuns in your browser

Works in your browser. What you paste or upload is processed on your device.

Key features of the SHA-256 hash generator

  • SHA-256 digest of any text as 64 lowercase hex characters
  • UTF-8 input, matching command-line tools such as sha256sum
  • Uses the browser's Web Crypto API; nothing is uploaded
  • One-click copy of the hash

How to use the SHA-256 hash generator

  1. Enter your text

Type or paste the exact text to hash. Spaces and line breaks count.

  2. Generate the hash

    Click Generate SHA-256 Hash.

  3. Copy the result

Copy the 64-character hash with the copy button.

  4. Compare

To verify a checksum, compare your result with the expected value, or paste both into the diff checker.

What is a SHA-256 hash generator?

A SHA-256 hash generator turns any text into a fixed 64-character hexadecimal string: its SHA-256 digest. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing a single character changes the whole result. This tool hashes your text with the browser's built-in Web Crypto API, so the text never leaves your device.

The output is the lowercase hex form of the 256-bit digest. The text is encoded as UTF-8 exactly as typed, including spaces and line breaks, so the result matches command-line tools such as sha256sum when they hash the same bytes. For example, hello hashes to 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824.

Limits: the tool hashes text, not files, and it cannot decrypt or look up a hash. SHA-256 is one-way: there is no way to turn a hash back into the original text. For storing passwords, use a slow password-hashing function such as bcrypt or Argon2 instead of plain SHA-256.

Why use a SHA-256 hash generator?

Use it to check that a value hasn't changed, to compare a string with a published checksum, to build or debug an API request signature, or to create a stable ID from a piece of text. Hashing in the browser keeps the text on your device.

What is SHA-256?

SHA-256 is a cryptographic hash function from the SHA-2 family, published by NIST. It maps any input to a 256-bit value, written as 64 hex characters. It is used in TLS certificates, software checksums, Docker image digests and Bitcoin.

Can I decrypt or look up a SHA-256 hash?

No. SHA-256 is one-way: there is no key and no method to reverse it. A string such as sha256:3a5f… is a digest, often a Docker image or package identifier, so search for it in the registry or project it came from rather than trying to decode it.

Why doesn't my hash match the one from another tool?

The input bytes differ. The usual causes are a trailing newline (echo adds one, so use echo -n), extra spaces, different line endings (Windows CRLF versus LF) or a different text encoding. This tool hashes the text exactly as typed, encoded as UTF-8.

Is SHA-256 secure?

For integrity checks and digital signatures, yes: no practical collision attack is known. For storing passwords, plain SHA-256 is too fast to resist guessing; use bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2, which are designed to be slow.

What is the difference between SHA-256 and MD5?

MD5 produces a 128-bit (32 hex character) hash and is broken for security use because collisions can be created. SHA-256 produces 256 bits and is still considered secure. Use MD5 only for non-security checks such as cache keys.

Can I hash a file here?

Not with this tool; it hashes text. To hash a file, use sha256sum on Linux, shasum -a 256 on macOS, or Get-FileHash in Windows PowerShell.
