Key features of the favicon checker

  • Lists every favicon link tag with its rel, sizes and type
  • Previews each declared icon
  • Flags a missing favicon declaration
  • Checks for an Apple touch icon
  • Checks for 192×192 and 512×512 PNG icons

How to use the favicon checker

  1. Enter the URL

Paste your home page address; Google reads the favicon from the home page.

  2. Run the check

The tool fetches the page and reads its icon tags.

  3. Review the declarations

Check each icon previews correctly and the sizes make sense.

  4. Read the issues

Note any missing favicon, Apple touch icon or 192/512 icons.

  5. Fix and re-check

Create the missing sizes with the favicon generator, add the link tags to your <head>, and check again.

What is a favicon checker?

A favicon checker finds the icons a website uses in browser tabs, bookmarks and search results, and checks that they are declared properly. Enter a URL and this tool reads the page's <head>, lists every <link rel="icon"> declaration (including shortcut icon and apple-touch-icon) with its declared size and type, and previews each icon.

It flags three common gaps: no favicon link at all (browsers then fall back to /favicon.ico at the site root), no Apple touch icon for iPhone and iPad home screens, and no 192×192 or 512×512 PNG icons for Android and installed web apps. An icon that fails to load disappears from the preview, which is a quick sign of a broken path.

Limits: the tool reads the HTML before JavaScript runs and doesn't open the web app manifest, so icons declared only in site.webmanifest are not listed. It doesn't check whether /favicon.ico exists or measure the real size of each file; it reports the sizes the tags declare.

Why use a favicon checker?

Your favicon appears next to your site name in Google's results and in every browser tab, so a missing or broken one looks careless and makes your result harder to spot. Without an Apple touch icon, iOS falls back to a screenshot or a plain letter when someone adds your site to their home screen.

Favicon checker: frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask the team

How do I check if my website has a favicon?

Enter your URL in the checker. It lists the favicon tags on the page and previews each icon. You can also open yourdomain.com/favicon.ico in a browser: if an icon appears, the default file exists.

Why isn't my favicon showing in Google search results?

Google needs a square favicon whose size is a multiple of 48 px (such as 48×48 or 96×96), declared with a <link rel="icon"> tag on the home page, and crawlable by Googlebot and Googlebot-Image. After a fix, Google shows the new icon only once it recrawls the home page, which can take days or weeks.

Why isn't my new favicon showing in my browser?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Hard-refresh the page, open the site in a private window, or add a version query such as favicon.png?v=2 to the link tag.

Which favicon sizes does a site need?

A 32×32 PNG (or an .ico) for browser tabs, a 180×180 Apple touch icon, and 192×192 plus 512×512 icons for Android and web app manifests. For Google Search, include at least one square size that is a multiple of 48 px.

Does a favicon affect SEO rankings?

No, it is not a ranking factor. It does change how your result looks in search, where a clear, recognisable icon helps people pick out your site.
