What is a sitemap URL extractor?

A sitemap URL extractor is a tool that reads a sitemap.xml file and lists every page URL in it. This one also follows sitemap index files to their child sitemaps, then fetches each page's meta title and meta description, so one run gives you a content inventory. Fetch 100 to 500 URLs per batch, load more, and export everything to CSV. It needs a free account.

What the extractor collects

One pass gives you a content inventory: every URL in the sitemap with the title and description it shows in search.

Sitemap mode

Paste a sitemap.xml or sitemap index URL. Child sitemaps are found automatically and every URL is collected.

URL list mode

No sitemap? Paste up to 500 URLs, one per line.

Meta title and description

Fetched from each page, with a success or error status per row so you can spot pages that failed to load.

Batch size

Fetch 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 URLs per batch, then load the next 100 without losing what you have.

CSV export

Download every loaded row, URL, title, description and status, as one CSV file.

Limits

Check one page in depth

Pages that block bots or need JavaScript to render their meta tags may come back empty or with an error.

How to extract URLs from a sitemap

Point the tool at a sitemap, fetch a batch, export.

  1. Find the sitemap

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for the Sitemap: line, or try /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml.

  2. Choose a mode

Sitemap mode reads a sitemap or sitemap index. URL list mode takes up to 500 URLs you paste, one per line.

  3. Pick a batch size and extract

Choose 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 URLs per batch, then run the extraction.

  4. Review the table

Each row shows the URL, its meta title, its meta description and whether the fetch succeeded. Load the next 100 when the sitemap has more.

  5. Export to CSV

Download every loaded row as a CSV file to sort, filter and share in a spreadsheet.

How to read the results

Read the table as a to-do list: empty, duplicate or overlong tags are the rows to fix first.

URL

The page address exactly as the sitemap lists it. Check for http, staging or parameter URLs that shouldn't be there.

Meta title

The page's <title>. Look for empty titles, duplicates across pages, and titles much longer than about 60 characters.

Meta description

The page's meta description. Empty or repeated descriptions leave Google to write its own snippet.

Status: success

The page loaded and its tags were read.

Status: error

The page didn't load or blocked the request. Check it in a browser: it may be gone, redirected, or blocking bots.

Successful and failed totals

The summary counts both. Many failures on one site usually means it blocks automated requests.

Why extract URLs from a sitemap?

A sitemap is the list of pages a site wants search engines to crawl. Extracting it gives you that list in a form you can work with: a starting point for a content audit, a meta tag review, a migration checklist or a look at how a competitor organises its site.

Pulling the meta title and description in the same pass saves a second crawl. You can see at a glance which pages share a title, which have no description, and which URLs in the sitemap no longer load.

Sitemaps, sitemap indexes and where to find them

A single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs. Larger sites publish a sitemap index: a sitemap of sitemaps, often split by type such as posts, pages and products. Paste the index URL and the extractor collects the URLs from every child sitemap.

Most sites name their sitemap in robots.txt. WordPress sites usually serve /wp-sitemap.xml or, with an SEO plugin, /sitemap_index.xml.

Sitemap URL extractor vs sitemap generator

A sitemap generator crawls a site and writes a new sitemap.xml. An extractor reads a sitemap that already exists and turns it into a list. Use the generator when a site has no sitemap, and the extractor to audit the one it has.

Gratis Sitemap URL Meta Extractor Tool

  • Sitemap-URL-modus: Paste a link to any sitemap.xml file (including sitemap index files). The tool automatically discovers all child sitemaps and collects every URL.
  • URL-lijstmodus: Paste up to 500 URLs manually — one per line.
  • Batchgrootte beheer: Choose how many URLs to fetch per batch — 100, 200, 300, 400, or 500.
  • Meer laden: When a sitemap has more URLs than your batch size, use the “Load next 100” button to append the next page of results without losing what you already fetched.
  • CSV-export: Download all fetched results as a CSV file, including all loaded pages combined.

Toepassingen

  • Auditeer je eigen website op ontbrekende of dubbele titels en beschrijvingen
  • Analyseer concurrentpagina's in bulk

What this sitemap extractor doesn't do

  • It needs a free, verified account, because fetching hundreds of pages runs on our servers.
  • It doesn't return lastmod, changefreq or priority values from the sitemap; the table holds URL, title, description and status.
  • Batches are 100 to 500 URLs, with more loaded 100 at a time. Very large sites take several passes.
  • Pages that block bots, or that only add their meta tags with JavaScript, may come back empty or as errors.
  • It doesn't check HTTP status codes, canonicals or indexability in depth. Use the SEO analyzer or the free audit for that.

Questions people ask

Something else? Ask the team

Can it extract URLs from compressed sitemaps?

Compressed .xml.gz sitemaps aren't officially supported. If a site only offers a .gz file, download and unzip it, then paste the URLs into URL list mode (up to 500 at a time).

What does the lastmod date tell me?

lastmod is the date the site owner says a page last changed. This extractor doesn't show it; open the sitemap file in your browser to read it. The extractor's table focuses on each page's URL, meta title, meta description and fetch status.

What is a sitemap URL extractor used for?

A sitemap URL extractor pulls every page URL out of an XML sitemap so you have a complete inventory of all indexed pages. Common uses include: bulk meta tag audits, broken link checks, content gap analysis, configuring crawl tools, and comparing page inventories before and after a site migration.

What is a sitemap index file?

A sitemap index file is a sitemap that references multiple individual sitemap files rather than listing page URLs directly. It is used when a site has more than 50,000 URLs or wants to organise sitemaps by content type (blog, products, news). The extractor follows all sitemap index references automatically to compile the complete URL list.

How do I find a website's sitemap URL?

Check robots.txt at yourdomain.com/robots.txt — most sites include a Sitemap: directive pointing to the sitemap location. Common default paths include /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml, and /wp-sitemap.xml for WordPress sites.

Why are some sitemap URLs returning 404 errors?

Sitemaps are not always kept up to date after pages are deleted or redirected. URLs that return 404s or 301 redirects should be removed from the sitemap — submitting broken URLs wastes crawl budget and signals poor site maintenance to search engines.

How is a sitemap URL extractor different from a sitemap generator?

A sitemap generator creates a new sitemap.xml file by crawling your live website. A sitemap URL extractor reads an existing sitemap file and outputs its URL contents as a list. They solve opposite problems: one builds sitemaps from scratch; the other reads and analyses sitemaps that already exist.

How do I extract all URLs from a sitemap?

Sign in, choose sitemap mode, paste the sitemap.xml address and click extract. The tool follows sitemap index files to their child sitemaps, lists every URL with its meta title and description, and lets you export the list to CSV.

Can I export a sitemap to CSV?

Yes. After a batch is fetched, export all loaded rows to a CSV file with the URL, meta title, meta description and fetch status.

Do I need an account to use the sitemap URL extractor?

Yes. Fetching hundreds of pages runs on our servers, so the tool asks you to sign in with a verified account. Signing up is free.
