Query fan-out
DefinitionQuery fan-out is when an AI search system turns one question into several narrower searches, retrieves results for each and combines them into one answer.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" (Google Search Central (opens in a new tab)). A buyer question can become separate searches for pricing, reviews, alternatives and features.
For you, it means a page can be cited for a question it never mentions word for word, as long as it ranks for one of the narrower searches and contains a clear answer. Covering the questions behind a purchase, in well-labelled sections of strong pages, matters more than one head keyword.
