What is a blur image?

This tool hides the parts of a photo you don't want to share. Drag a box over a face, a car number plate, a house number, a name on a screenshot or a document, and choose how to hide it: blur, pixelate, or a solid box in any colour. Draw as many boxes as you need, move and resize them, and check the live preview before you save. You can also blur or pixelate the whole picture, for a soft background or a teaser image.

The blur is calculated by the tool itself (three box-blur passes that approximate a Gaussian blur), so it looks the same in Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Strength is relative to the picture size, so the preview and the full-size download match. The saved file is re-encoded from the edited pixels, so the original EXIF data, including GPS location, is not carried over.

Limits: blur and pixelation reduce detail, they don't erase it completely. Light blur or small pixel blocks can leave large text readable, and pixelated text can sometimes be partly reconstructed. For anything sensitive, such as ID numbers, bank details or addresses, use the Solid box effect, which replaces those pixels entirely. Photos above about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to that size.

Why use a blur image?

Sharing a photo of a street, a car, a parcel or a screenshot often means sharing someone's face, plate or address by accident. Covering those parts takes a few seconds here, and because the image never leaves your device, the information you are hiding is never sent to anyone else.

Blur image: frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask the team

Is my photo uploaded when I blur it?

No. The blur is calculated in your browser and the edited photo is saved straight from it, so the faces, plates or addresses you are hiding never reach our server. The server is only told that a run happened, to count your free daily run.

Can a blurred or pixelated area be un-blurred?

The saved file doesn't contain the original pixels, but a light blur or small pixel blocks can leave text readable, and tools exist that can sometimes guess pixelated text. Use a strength of 50% or more, or the Solid box effect, for anything sensitive such as ID numbers, card details or addresses.

How do I blur a face or number plate?

Drag a box over it on the preview, a little larger than the face or plate itself, then pick Blur or Pixelate and raise the strength until it can't be read. Add one box per face or plate; there is no automatic face detection.

Can I blur the whole picture?

Yes. Choose Whole image under Area, then pick Blur or Pixelate and set the strength. This is useful for soft backgrounds, teasers and spoilers.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Draw boxes with your finger on the preview, and use the From left, From top, Width and Height inputs for precise adjustments. The blur works the same in Safari as in Chrome.

Does the tool remove location data?

The saved image is created from the edited pixels, so the original EXIF metadata (camera model, date and GPS location) is not copied into it. The photo on your device keeps its own metadata unchanged.

Is blurring free?

You get one free run per tool per day, and the run is spent only when you download. After that, each download costs 5 credits with a free AI Rank Lab account. Drawing and adjusting boxes is always free.
