Compare PDF

Compare two versions of a PDF page by page: word-level text changes highlighted, a visual overlay of what moved, and a report you can download.

1. Original PDF

2. Changed PDF

Page 1 is compared with page 1, page 2 with page 2, and so on. You get a word-by-word text comparison and a visual overlay for each page. Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so only the visual overlay shows their changes.

Works in your browser. What you paste or upload is processed on your device.

Key features of the compare PDF

  • Word-by-word text comparison with additions in green and deletions in red
  • Visual overlay that shows changed images, signatures and layout, not only text
  • Side-by-side view of the two versions of each page
  • Summary of changed pages, words added and words removed
  • Filter the page list to changed pages only
  • Downloadable HTML report, with or without unchanged pages
  • Runs in your browser: neither PDF is uploaded

What is a compare PDF?

Compare PDF shows what changed between two versions of a document: a contract before and after the other side's edits, two drafts of a report, or a quote that was revised. You choose the original and the changed PDF, and the tool compares page 1 with page 1, page 2 with page 2, and so on.

For every page you get three views. Text shows the page's words with additions highlighted in green and deletions struck through in red, from a word-by-word comparison of the text in each PDF. Overlay draws both versions on top of each other: ink only in the original shows in red, ink only in the changed version in green, and everything the same in light gray, which catches moved images, changed logos, signatures and layout shifts that have no text. Side by side shows the two pages next to each other. A summary counts the pages with changes and the words added and removed, and you can download the whole comparison as a self-contained HTML report that opens in any browser and can be printed to PDF.

Limits: pages are matched by position, so a page inserted in the middle makes every later page show as changed. Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so only the visual overlay shows their changes. The visual overlay covers the first 150 pages.

Why use a compare PDF?

Reading two versions of a contract line by line is slow, and small edits to a figure, a date or a clause are easy to miss. A side-by-side comparison points straight at them. Comparing in your browser matters for exactly these documents: unsigned contracts and draft reports should not be uploaded to a third party.

Compare PDF: frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask the team

Are my PDFs uploaded to compare them?

No. Both PDFs are read and compared inside your browser, and the report is built there too. Our server only records that a run happened, to count the free daily use.

How does the text comparison work?

The tool takes the text of each page from both PDFs and finds the longest run of words they share, then marks the words only in the changed version as added and the words only in the original as removed. Changes in spacing or line breaks alone are ignored.

Can it compare scanned PDFs?

Yes, with the visual overlay, which compares the pages pixel by pixel and colours what differs. Scans have no text layer, so the word comparison stays empty; run both files through OCR PDF first if you need a word-level comparison.

What if the PDFs have a different number of pages?

Pages are compared by position, and extra pages are listed as only in the original or only in the changed PDF. If a page was inserted in the middle, every page after it will show as changed, so split or remove that page first for a clean comparison.

Can I save or share the comparison?

Yes. Download report saves a single HTML file with the summary, every changed page's text differences and the visual overlays. It opens in any browser, and you can print it to PDF from there. Tick Include unchanged pages for a complete record.

Can I compare PDFs on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome and choose the two PDFs from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or your downloads. On a narrow screen the page list sits above the comparison and scrolls sideways.

Is Compare PDF free?

You get one free run of this tool per day. After that, each run costs 5 credits (5 US cents), which needs a free AI Rank Lab account. One run is one press of the main button.
