Good for the web (recommended). AVIF quality uses its own scale, so 50–65 is typical for web images. Use the free preview to judge.

Image size

Smaller sizes give lighter files and faster conversion. Images are never enlarged.

AVIF encoding is slow: expect a few seconds per photo on a laptop and longer on a phone. Keep this tab open until it finishes. Choosing a smaller image size makes it much faster.

Works in your browser. What you paste or upload is processed on your device.

What is a JPG to AVIF converter?

AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec. At the same visual quality it is usually smaller than JPG and often smaller than WebP, which makes pages load faster and can help Core Web Vitals scores such as Largest Contentful Paint. All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display AVIF.

This tool encodes your JPG, PNG or WebP images to AVIF in your browser, using the open-source libavif encoder compiled to WebAssembly and run in a background worker so the page stays responsive. Set the quality (60% by default; AVIF's scale differs from JPG's, so 50–65 is typical for the web), optionally scale images to 2048, 1600 or 1080 px, and use the free preview to encode the first image and see its exact size and look before you convert the batch. PNG transparency is kept.

Be aware: AVIF encoding is slow. Expect a few seconds per photo on a laptop and longer on a phone, so keep the tab open until the batch finishes; smaller image sizes are much faster. Converting a JPG to AVIF can't restore detail the JPG already lost. Metadata such as location isn't copied, and images above about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to that size.

Why use a JPG to AVIF converter?

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Serving AVIF instead of JPG cuts bytes without a visible drop in quality, which helps mobile visitors and page speed. Encoding in your browser means you don't need to set up a command-line encoder or upload unpublished images to a third-party service.

Something else? Ask the team

How much smaller is AVIF than JPG?

It depends on the image and the quality you choose. Photos usually come out noticeably smaller than an equivalent JPG at a similar look. Use the free preview: it encodes your first image with your settings and shows the exact file size next to the original.

What quality should I use for AVIF?

AVIF's quality scale isn't the same as JPG's. Around 50–65 looks good for most web photos; go higher for detailed product shots or images with fine text, and lower for large background images. Preview the first image to compare before converting the batch.

Why is AVIF conversion so slow?

AVIF gets its small sizes from heavy compression work, so encoding takes far longer than saving a JPG: a few seconds per photo on a laptop, longer on a phone. Choosing a smaller image size speeds it up a lot. Keep the tab open while it runs.

Do all browsers support AVIF?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (macOS Ventura or iOS 16 and later) display AVIF. Some email clients, older devices and desktop apps don't, so for those keep a JPG fallback, for example with the HTML <picture> element.

Does it keep transparency from PNG files?

Yes. AVIF supports transparency, and transparent areas in PNG or WebP images stay transparent in the AVIF.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The AVIF encoder runs in your browser. Unpublished images and client work stay on your device; our server only counts the run.

Can I convert to AVIF on a phone?

Yes, it works in modern mobile browsers, but encoding is slower on phones and big photos use a lot of memory. For large batches, a laptop or desktop is quicker, or choose a smaller image size.

Is JPG to AVIF free?

You get one free run of this tool per day, and one run converts the whole batch you press the button for. After that, each run costs 5 credits (5 US cents) from a free AI Rank Lab account. The free run resets every day.
