What is a PDF to text converter?
PDF to Text pulls the words out of a PDF so you can paste them into an email, a document, a spreadsheet, a translation tool or an AI assistant. It reads the PDF's text layer with pdf.js, rebuilds the lines (adding the spaces and line breaks that copying from a PDF viewer often loses) and returns plain text you can copy in one click or download as a .txt file.
You can extract every page or only some, and add a marker such as "--- Page 4 ---" before each page so you can tell where text came from. Line breaks can stay as they are in the PDF, or be joined into flowing paragraphs, which also re-joins words hyphenated across lines. Password-protected PDFs open once you type the password.
Limits: this only works for PDFs that contain real text, the kind you can select in a PDF viewer. Scanned documents and photos of pages contain only pictures; the tool tells you which pages have no text and points you to OCR PDF, which reads text from images. The output is plain text: fonts, bold, colours, images and table borders are not kept, and multi-column layouts or tables can come out in the order the text was stored, which is not always reading order.
Why use a PDF to text converter?
Copying from a PDF viewer often scrambles spacing, breaks every line in the middle of a sentence or misses pages. Extracting the text cleanly saves retyping, and makes contracts, research papers and reports easy to quote, search, translate or summarise. Because it runs in your browser, confidential documents stay on your device.
The PDF contains pictures of pages, typically a scan or phone photo, rather than text. There are no letters to extract, only pixels. Use OCR PDF, which recognises the letters in the images and gives you text.
Does it keep formatting, tables or images?
No. The result is plain text: no fonts, bold, colours or pictures. Table cells come out as text on their lines, without borders, and two-column pages may mix the columns. For editable layouts, a PDF to Word converter is the better tool.
What do the page markers do?
With Add page markers on, each page's text starts with a line like "--- Page 3 ---". That helps you cite or check where something came from. Turn it off for one continuous block of text.
Should I keep line breaks or join paragraphs?
Keep line breaks when the layout matters, such as addresses, poems, code or lists. Join into paragraphs when you will paste into a document, email or AI tool, so sentences aren't broken at the end of every printed line.
Can I extract text from a PDF on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser, choose the PDF from Files or Drive, extract, then tap Copy text and paste wherever you need it, or download the .txt file.
Is my document sent to a server?
No. The PDF is read in your browser tab and the text is created on your device. Our server only counts runs for the free daily use; it never sees the file or the text.
Does it work with other languages?
Yes, for any language whose text is stored as real characters in the PDF, including Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese. Some older PDFs map their fonts in unusual ways, and their text can come out garbled; OCR PDF is the fallback for those.
Is PDF to Text free?
You get one free run of this tool per day. After that, each run costs 5 credits (5 US cents), which needs a free AI Rank Lab account. One run is one press of the main button, however many pages or files it handles.
