Analytics chat
Ask GA4 questions in plain English and check the answer.
In shortAnalytics chat lets you ask your GA4 property questions in plain English, such as "top landing pages from chatgpt.com last month". It turns your question into one GA4 report, runs it on your live data and writes a short answer with the numbers. Open Analytics → Google Analytics 4 → Analytics chat, pick a property and type. Each message costs credits, charged when you send it, so ask specific questions and check the figures.
What Analytics chat is for
GA4's reports are powerful but slow to set up for a one-off question. Analytics chat is for the questions you'd otherwise spend ten minutes clicking through: which pages Perplexity visitors land on, how many new users came from India last week, which device has the lowest engagement rate.
Behind the scenes, an AI model (Gemini) reads your question, writes a GA4 Data API request, runs it against your property and summarises the result. If GA4 rejects the request, the model tries to fix it up to two more times. The answer is written from the data GA4 returned, not from general knowledge.
Before you start
- GA4 connected and a property selected. See Connect GA4 and read the overview.
- Enough credits for each message. The chat shows the price per message in the session list footer and the chat header. It is labelled "coins", but it is taken from your normal credit balance.
Ask a question step by step
- Open Analytics chatGo to Analytics → Google Analytics 4 → Analytics chat. On the left is Chat Sessions with a New Chat button. With a property selected and no session open, the main area says Start a Conversation.
- Type a specific questionName the metric, the dimension and the period: "sessions by session source from chatgpt.com in the last 28 days" works better than "how is ChatGPT doing". Press Enter or the send button. A new chat session is created for you, titled with your question.
- Wait for the answerYou'll see Analyzing your data... while the report runs. The answer arrives as text, often with a small table and the key numbers in bold.
- Ask a follow-upFollow-ups in the same session can say "now split that by device". The chat sends your last five messages as context, so older parts of a long conversation are forgotten. Start a New Chat for a new topic.
- Rename or delete sessionsOpen the menu on a session in the left column and choose Rename or Delete. Sessions are saved per property, so switching property shows that property's chats.
What it can and can't answer
| Good questions | Questions it can't answer |
|---|---|
| Sessions, users, new users, page views by day, week or month | Anything GA4 doesn't collect, such as rankings or keywords |
| Traffic by session source, medium, channel group or campaign | Age and gender (not in the allowed fields) |
| Top landing pages or page titles for one source | Two separate periods side by side in one answer (one date range per question) |
| Countries, cities, devices, browsers | Data from Search Console (use the MCP command center) |
| Engagement rate, conversions and total revenue | Events you haven't set up in GA4 |
The chat can only use a fixed list of GA4 metrics and dimensions. If your question needs something outside that list, it replies "I can't answer that with Google Analytics data" with a reason. If you don't name a period, the model picks one; check the dates in the answer.
The credits are taken when you send the message, before the query runs. If the question is unsupported, or GA4 keeps rejecting the query, you still get a reply explaining why, and the credits are not returned. Rephrase using GA4 terms (sessions, session source, landing page, device category) rather than resending the same wording.
The answer is an AI summary of real data, and summaries can round, drop rows or misread a period. For numbers that go into a client report, ask the same thing in GA4 (Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, or an exploration) and compare once. If they match, you can trust that style of question.
