Compress PDF

Make PDFs smaller in your browser with three levels: lossless clean-up, image recompression that keeps text selectable, or strong page-image compression.

How much to compress

Images larger than this at their printed size are scaled down. Smaller ones are left alone.

Recommended finds the photos and scans inside the PDF and saves them at 150 DPI as JPEG. Text, vector drawings, links, bookmarks and form fields are not touched.

Works in your browser. What you paste or upload is processed on your device.

Key features of the compress PDF

  • Three levels: Low (lossless), Recommended (recompresses photos, keeps text selectable) and Strong (redraws pages as images)
  • Choose the image resolution (96 to 300 DPI) and JPEG quality
  • Shows the size before and after, and keeps the original when compression would not help
  • Compress up to 10 PDFs in one run and download them together as a ZIP
  • Merges duplicate fonts and images left behind by merged PDFs
  • Password-protected PDFs work with the Strong level once you enter the password
  • Runs in your browser: the PDF is never uploaded

How to use the compress PDF

  1. Choose your PDFs

Tap the box and pick one PDF or up to 10, or drag them onto the page. Page thumbnails appear for a single file.

  2. Pick a level

Leave it on Recommended for most files. Use Low when nothing may change, and Strong when you need the smallest file and do not need to select text.

  3. Adjust resolution if needed

For Recommended, 150 DPI suits screens and office printing; choose 96 DPI for a smaller file or 300 DPI for a print shop.

  4. Compress

Press Compress PDF. A progress bar shows each file and image being processed.

  5. Check the saving and download

Compare the before and after sizes, then download the PDF, or all files as one ZIP.

What is a compress PDF?

Compress PDF makes a PDF file smaller so it fits under an email attachment limit or an upload cap on a job, exam or government portal. Most of the weight in a large PDF is photos and scans stored at far more detail than a screen or office printer can show, plus duplicate fonts and images left behind when files are merged. This tool reads the PDF in your browser and gives you three levels.

Low is a lossless re-save: identical fonts and images are stored once, page data is recompressed at the highest lossless setting, unused objects are dropped and objects are packed into compressed streams. Nothing visible changes. Recommended also finds the photos and scans inside the PDF, works out the size each one is drawn at on the page, scales any image above the resolution you pick (150 DPI by default) down to it and saves it again as JPEG in the same place. Text, vector drawings, links, bookmarks and form fields are not touched, so text stays selectable. Strong redraws every page as a JPEG image at 72, 100 or 150 DPI, which gives the biggest saving but turns the text into part of the picture.

Limits: a PDF that is mostly text and already well built may shrink very little; when a result is not smaller than the original, the tool keeps your original and tells you so. Recommended leaves CMYK, indexed-colour and masked images as they are, so print-ready files from design software can see smaller savings. Password-protected PDFs can only be compressed with Strong, after you enter the password.

Why use a compress PDF?

A smaller PDF sends faster, fits email limits (usually 20–25 MB) and form caps such as 1 MB or 200 KB, and loads quicker on a phone. Compressing in your browser means contracts, bank statements and ID scans are never uploaded to a stranger's server, and the before-and-after sizes show exactly what you saved before you download.

Is it safe to compress a PDF here?

Yes. The PDF is read and rewritten inside your browser, so it never reaches our servers. Our server only records that a run happened, to count the free daily use. Closing the tab clears everything.

Will compressing make my PDF blurry?

Low changes nothing you can see. Recommended only lowers the resolution of photos and scans that are stored above the DPI you choose, and 150 DPI still prints cleanly on an office printer; text and line drawings stay sharp because they are not images. Strong turns whole pages into images, so small print can soften at 72 DPI; pick 150 DPI if that matters.

Why did my PDF hardly get smaller?

Text-only PDFs and files that were already optimised have little left to remove. If the result would not be smaller, the tool keeps your original unchanged. Try Strong for the biggest saving, accepting that the text becomes part of the page image.

How do I compress a PDF to 1 MB or 200 KB?

Start with Recommended at 150 DPI and Medium quality. If the file is still too big, choose 96 DPI or Low quality, or switch to Strong at 100 or 72 DPI, which suits scanned documents for upload forms. The after size is shown before you download, so you can try again with other settings.

Can I compress a PDF on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the box and choose the PDF from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or your downloads. The compressed PDF downloads to your Files app or Downloads folder. Very large scanned PDFs are quicker on a computer.

Can I compress several PDFs at once?

Yes, up to 10 PDFs of up to 200 MB each in one run. Each file gets its own before-and-after size, and you can download them separately or together as a ZIP.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

Only with the Strong level, which opens the PDF with the password you type and redraws the pages; the result has no password. Low and Recommended rewrite the file's structure, which is not possible while it is encrypted, so remove the password first if you want to keep selectable text.
