What is an HEIC to JPG converter?

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default since iOS 11. It keeps photos small, but Windows, many websites, upload forms and older apps still can't open it. JPG opens everywhere. This converter reads your HEIC photos and saves each one as a standard JPG file you can email, upload or edit.

The conversion runs inside your browser. Safari on a recent Mac or iPhone decodes HEIC itself; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox the tool loads a HEIC decoder (libheif compiled to WebAssembly) the first time you convert. Each photo is drawn the right way up and saved at the JPG quality you choose (92% by default, which looks the same as the original to most people). You can also shrink photos to 2048, 1600 or 1080 pixels on the long edge for lighter files.

Honest limits: JPG has no HDR, so bright iPhone HDR highlights are saved as normal photos. Metadata such as camera settings and location is not copied into the JPG. A HEIC file that holds several images (a burst or a Live Photo still with extras) gives you its main photo only. Photos above about 16.7 megapixels, such as 24 MP and 48 MP shots from recent iPhone Pro models, are scaled down to about 16.7 MP so the conversion also works on phones.

Why use an HEIC to JPG converter?

When a visa portal, a job site, a printer or a Windows colleague says it can't open your photo, it is almost always because the file is HEIC. Converting in the browser fixes that in seconds without installing an app, and because nothing is uploaded your family photos and documents stay on your own device.

HEIC to JPG converter: frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask the team

Is it safe to convert my photos here?

Yes. The conversion happens in your browser on your own device. Your photos are never uploaded to our servers or anyone else's. The only thing our server sees is that a conversion run took place, so it can count your free run.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap the upload box, choose Photo Library and select your photos. They arrive as HEIC because the tool asks for that format explicitly. Press Convert to JPG, then download the files and save them to Files or Photos. To stop your iPhone taking HEIC photos at all, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible.

Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

JPG is a compressed format, so a tiny amount of detail is always lost, but at the default 92% quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing. Choose 100% if you plan to edit the photo further. JPG files are usually larger than the HEIC they came from, because HEIC compresses more efficiently.

How do I open HEIC files on Windows?

Windows can only show HEIC photos after you install Microsoft's HEIF and HEVC extensions, and many programs still can't open them. Converting the photos to JPG here is the quicker fix: the JPG files open in every Windows app, browser and upload form.

Can I convert many photos at once?

Yes, up to 30 photos per batch. They are converted one after another, and you can download them separately or as one ZIP. Very large batches on an older phone can run out of memory; if that happens, convert fewer photos at a time.

Does the JPG keep the photo's location and date?

No. The JPG files contain the image only, without the EXIF metadata (location, camera model, date taken) stored in the HEIC. That makes them safer to share publicly, but photo apps may sort them by the date you converted them.

Is the HEIC to JPG converter free?

You get one free run of this tool per day, and one run converts the whole batch you press the button for. After that, each run costs 5 credits (5 US cents) from a free AI Rank Lab account. The free run resets every day.

Why did one of my photos fail to convert?

Usually the file is not a complete HEIC photo: it may still be downloading from iCloud, be damaged, or be a different file renamed to .heic. Make sure Download and Keep Originals is on in Settings > Photos, or export the photo again, then retry. Photos that fail are listed with the reason, and the others still convert.
