PNG is lossless, so there is no quality setting: every pixel is kept. PNG files are larger than HEIC, often several times larger.

What is an HEIC to PNG converter?

PNG is a lossless image format: every pixel is stored exactly, with no compression artefacts. Converting an iPhone HEIC photo to PNG gives you a file that design tools, presentation software, editors and websites all accept, and that won't lose any more detail however often you open and save it.

This tool decodes each HEIC photo in your browser (natively in recent Safari, otherwise with a WebAssembly HEIC decoder) and writes it out as PNG. There is no quality setting because nothing is thrown away. You can keep the full size or scale photos to 2048, 1600 or 1080 pixels on the long edge, which also makes the PNG files much lighter.

What to expect: PNG files of photos are large, often several times the size of the HEIC and larger than a JPG. Choose PNG when you need lossless pixels for editing, cut-outs or print work; for sharing or uploading, HEIC to JPG gives far smaller files. Metadata such as location is not copied, a multi-image HEIC gives you its main photo, and photos above about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to that size so the tool also works on phones.

Why use an HEIC to PNG converter?

If you edit iPhone photos in tools like Figma, Canva, Photoshop or a slide deck, starting from a lossless PNG avoids stacking compression on compression. Converting in your browser means you don't need to install anything, and private photos stay on your device.

HEIC to PNG converter: frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask the team

Is HEIC to PNG better than HEIC to JPG?

It depends on what you need. PNG is lossless, so it is the better choice for editing, cut-outs and print preparation. JPG is much smaller and fine for sharing, email and upload forms. If a website just needs to accept your photo, convert to JPG instead.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC uses very efficient lossy compression, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. A 2 MB iPhone photo can easily become a 10 MB or larger PNG. Choosing 2048 or 1600 px in the size option reduces this a lot.

Does converting to PNG keep transparency?

PNG supports transparency, but iPhone camera photos don't have any, so the result is a normal opaque image. If you need a transparent background, convert to PNG first and then use a background remover.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG on my iPhone?

Yes. Open the page in Safari, tap the upload box and choose your photos from the library. After converting, tap Download and save the PNGs to the Files app. To make your camera save JPG instead of HEIC from now on, use Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and PNG encoding both happen in your browser. Our server only records that a run happened so it can count your daily free run.

Is there a size limit?

Each file can be up to 100 MB and you can convert 30 at a time. Photos larger than about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to that size, because phones (especially iPhones) refuse to draw bigger images in the browser.

Is this converter free?

You get one free run of this tool per day, and one run converts the whole batch you press the button for. After that, each run costs 5 credits (5 US cents) from a free AI Rank Lab account. The free run resets every day.
