Generate llms.txt
What goes in the file, how to publish it, and why it does not guarantee citations.
In shortllms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of your site that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and a curated list of its key pages. Open Content → Schema and AI files → LLMs.txt generator, enter your homepage URL and click Generate. Copy or download the file, check it with the free llms.txt checker, and upload it so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It's optional, and it doesn't make AI engines cite you.
What llms.txt is, and what it isn't
llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org). It's a Markdown file with a fixed shape: the site's name as a heading, a one-line summary, and sections listing the pages that matter most, each with a short note. The idea is that an AI tool reading your site can find the important pages without crawling everything.
Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt, and having the file doesn't make any AI engine read your site, rank it or cite it. Treat it as a cheap, tidy extra for tools and agents that look for it, not as a visibility tactic. What earns citations is still useful pages that answer the question. See Structured data and llms.txt for the bigger picture.
Before you start
- Pick the page to generate from. The generator reads only the URL you enter: its title, description, headings, some of its text, and up to 40 links on it that point to your own site. Your homepage, or a page with good navigation, gives the best result.
- Make sure that page is public and loads without a login or a cookie wall.
- Know how you'll upload a file to the root of your site (hosting file manager, FTP, your CMS or your developer).
Generate the file

Edit anything that's wrong in a text editor after you download it.

How to read the file
| Part | Format | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Name | One H1 line: # Site name | It's your brand name, spelled the way you want AI tools to use it |
| Summary | One blockquote line: > ... | One accurate sentence on what you do and for whom |
| Sections | H2 headings, each with lines like - [Page](https://...): note | Only real, important pages; every URL is absolute and works |
| Optional | A last H2 named exactly Optional | Secondary pages (contact, legal) that can be skipped |
The file is meant to be a short list of your best pages, not a sitemap. When you launch or retire a key page, update the file. The generator only lists pages linked from the URL you gave it and is told never to invent URLs, so a page missing from your navigation won't appear; add it by hand.
What it costs
Each generation has one price, charged only when the file is generated successfully. Reopening a past generation is free. The llms.txt checker is free.
There's also a generator on the website at /tools/llms-txt-generator. It charges an older, separate coin balance rather than your credits, so it can say "Insufficient coins" while you have credits. Use the dashboard generator described here.
