GEO (generative engine optimization)
DefinitionGEO is the work of getting your brand mentioned, recommended and cited in answers written by generative AI such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.
Where AEO is about being the quoted source, GEO is about presence in generated answers overall: whether the model names your brand, where it puts you, in what tone, and whether it links your pages. Part of GEO happens on sites you don't own, such as review sites and comparison articles that engines cite.
The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues (arXiv (opens in a new tab)). You measure GEO by running the same questions on several engines, more than once, and comparing mentions, share of voice and citations over time. See Measuring AI visibility honestly.
