File Checksum Calculator

Calculate the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 or CRC32 hash of any file, even several GB, and compare it with the checksum from a download page.

Hash types

The type is detected from its length. Upper or lower case both work.

Use it to check a download (an ISO, an installer, a backup) against the checksum its website publishes. The file is read in your browser in small pieces, so even very large files never leave your device.

Works in your browser. What you paste or upload is processed on your device.

Key features of the file checksum calculator

  • MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC32
  • Files up to 10 GB, read in chunks with a live progress bar
  • Paste an expected hash to get a clear Match or No match
  • Hash type detected automatically from the pasted value
  • Up to 50 files per run, each with every chosen hash
  • Copy buttons and a .txt export in sha256sum format
  • Upper- or lower-case display; comparison ignores case
  • Runs in your browser: files are never uploaded

How to use the file checksum calculator

  1. Choose the files

Press Choose files to check, or drop them on the box. Any file type works.

  2. Pick the hash types

MD5 and SHA-256 are selected by default. Tick any others you need.

  3. Paste the expected hash (optional)

Copy the checksum from the download page and paste it. Its type is detected from its length.

  4. Calculate

Press Calculate. Large files show progress as they are read.

  5. Read the result

Look for Match or No match, copy any hash, or save them all as a .txt file.

What is a file checksum calculator?

A checksum (or hash) is a short fingerprint calculated from every byte of a file. If even one byte changes, the fingerprint changes completely. Software sites publish the SHA-256 or MD5 checksum of their downloads so you can confirm that the file you got is complete and is the one they released.

This tool calculates MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC32 in your browser. Each file is read in 4 MB pieces and fed to every chosen hash at once (using hash-wasm, a WebAssembly hashing library), so multi-gigabyte ISO images and backups work without loading the whole file into memory. Paste the checksum from the download page and the tool detects its type from its length and tells you whether it matches. You can hash up to 50 files in one go and save the results as a text file in the familiar "hash filename" format.

What a checksum can and can't tell you: a match proves your file is identical to the one the checksum was made from. It doesn't prove the original is safe, and MD5 and SHA-1 are no longer considered secure against deliberate tampering; use SHA-256 when the site offers it.

Why use a file checksum calculator?

Interrupted downloads, flaky USB sticks and tampered mirrors produce files that look normal but aren't. Checking the hash takes seconds and catches all of them before you install an operating system, flash firmware or restore a backup. Doing it in the browser means no command line and no upload of large or private files.

How do I check the SHA-256 checksum of a file?

Choose the file, keep SHA-256 ticked, paste the checksum from the website into Expected hash and press Calculate. A green Match means the file is identical to the original; No match means it is different and should be downloaded again.

Is my file uploaded to calculate the hash?

No. The file is read and hashed by code running in your browser. Only the run count reaches our server, for the daily free limit. That is why it also works for multi-GB files.

What is the difference between MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256?

They are different hash algorithms with different lengths: MD5 gives 32 hex characters, SHA-1 gives 40 and SHA-256 gives 64. MD5 and SHA-1 still catch accidental corruption, but they can be forged on purpose, so SHA-256 or SHA-512 is the safer check.

How large a file can I check?

Up to 10 GB per file. The file is read in 4 MB pieces, so memory use stays low; the time depends on your device and disk, typically a few seconds per GB on a modern computer.

Can I check a checksum on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, choose the file from Files or Downloads, paste the expected hash and press Calculate. Very large files are faster on a computer.

Why does my hash not match?

The download may be incomplete or corrupted, you may have a different version than the one the checksum is for, or the checksum is for another file (for example the .zip rather than the extracted file). Download the file again from the official source and compare once more.

Can I hash several files at once?

Yes, up to 50 files per run. Each file gets every hash type you ticked, and Save as .txt writes them in the "hash filename" format that sha256sum and md5sum can verify.

Is the checksum calculator free?

You get one free run of this tool per day. After that, each run costs credits from a free AI Rank Lab account. One run covers every file you add before pressing Calculate.
