In shortOpen Analytics → Search Console → GSC overview, click the settings icon in the top bar and choose Connect Google Search Console. Approve read-only access in the Google window, then pick your account and site in the two selectors. The overview shows clicks, impressions, CTR and average position against the previous period, plus top queries, pages, devices and countries. Reading it is free; the optional AI report costs credits.

What the overview is for

Google Search Console is Google's own record of how your site performs in search: how often your pages were shown (impressions), how often people clicked, the click-through rate (CTR) and your average position. AI Rank Lab reads that data through Google's Search Analytics API so you can see it next to your AI search work, and so the analyses in the next lessons have something to work on.

Use the overview as your weekly health check. It answers three questions quickly: is organic search traffic going up or down, which queries and pages drive it, and where (device and country) it comes from.

Before you start

  • You need a Google account that already has access to the site in Search Console. AI Rank Lab can't verify a site for you; that happens in Search Console itself.
  • AI Rank Lab asks Google for read-only Search Console access plus your name and email. It can't change anything in your Search Console account.
  • Allow pop-ups for airanklab.com. The Google sign-in opens in a small pop-up window.

Connect Search Console step by step

  1. Open the GSC overviewIn the sidebar go to Analytics → Search Console → GSC overview. If nothing is connected yet you'll see No site connected and a hint to use the settings icon. Link straight to this page or another tool page: the bare /dashboard/gsc-mastery address has no page of its own.
  2. Open the connections dialogClick the settings icon (the sliders button) at the right of the top bar. A dialog titled Google Search Console Connections lists any connected Google accounts. Click Connect Google Search Console.
  3. Approve access in the Google windowChoose the Google account and approve. When it works, the pop-up closes itself and the page reloads with your account loaded. If the Google window opened as a normal tab or lost its link to the original page, you'll land on the MCP command center page instead; that's expected, and the connection is still saved. If your browser blocks the pop-up, nothing opens and the button keeps spinning: allow pop-ups for airanklab.com, reload the page and try again.
  4. Pick the account and siteUse Select Account and Select Site in the top bar. Your choice is remembered in this browser and applies to every Search Console page. A domain property appears as sc-domain:example.com; a URL-prefix property appears as the address.
  5. Choose a periodUse the 7d, 14d, 28d or 90d buttons (28 days is the default). The refresh button re-reads the data. Every period ends yesterday and is compared with the same number of days just before it.

How to read the overview

CardWhat it tells youWatch for
Total ClicksVisits from Google search in the period, with the previous period underneathA drop here is the number that hurts; find out where in Top Pages
Total ImpressionsHow often any of your pages appeared in resultsImpressions up and clicks flat usually means you rank for more queries, but low on the page
Avg. CTRClicks divided by impressionsA falling CTR with steady position often means a new result type above you, such as an AI Overview
Avg. PositionAverage rank, weighted by impressions. Lower is betterNew rankings for long-tail queries can make this worse while traffic grows

Below the cards, Click & Impression Trend shows the daily line, Top Queries and Top Pages list the 20 biggest by clicks, and Device Breakdown and Top Countries show where the clicks come from. At the bottom, GSC Mastery Tools links to the analyses covered in the rest of this course.

The newest days are often incomplete

Search Console usually needs a couple of days to finalise its numbers, so the last point on the trend line can look low. Don't react to a one-day dip at the right-hand edge.

The AI Intelligence Report

The AI Intelligence Report card has a Generate Report button. It sends the overview numbers you are looking at to an AI model and returns a 0 to 100 health score, an executive summary, critical opportunities, risk alerts, quick wins for this week and a 30-day priority. It's a starting point for a conversation, not a measurement: the score is the model's judgement of your data. Regenerate runs it again and charges again.

What this connection can't show

Search Console's Generative AI performance report can't be imported: Google offers no API for it. The overview covers classic web search performance. For how AI engines mention and cite you, use brand visibility. Also, credits for the AI report are taken before the model runs, so a failed report is not refunded automatically.

Check yourself

1. You approved Google access, but instead of returning to the overview you landed on the MCP command center. What happened?
2. Your CTR fell this month while average position stayed the same. What is a likely cause?
3. Which of these does reading the GSC overview charge?
