CTR opportunities
High-impression, low-CTR queries and title and description fixes.
In shortCTR opportunities (Analytics → Search Console → CTR opportunities) finds queries where you already rank but get fewer clicks than your position should earn. It compares each query's click-through rate with a benchmark for its position, ranks the gaps by lost clicks, and suggests five new title tags per query. Rewriting the title and meta description is often the fastest traffic win, because the ranking already exists.
Why CTR is worth your time
Click-through rate (CTR) is clicks divided by impressions. If a page ranks 3rd for a query with 10,000 impressions a month and gets a 2% CTR, it earns 200 clicks. Pages around that position often earn several times more. You don't need a better ranking to close that gap; you need a result people want to click.
The usual causes are a title that doesn't match the words people searched, a vague or truncated title, a missing or generic meta description, or a results page crowded with other features that push your listing down.
How the tool scores an opportunity
- It reads the last 30 days of Search Console data by query and page, keeping rows with at least 50 impressions.
- It looks up an expected CTR for the position: 25% at position 1, 15% at 2, 10% at 3, 7% at 4, 5% at 5, then falling half a point per position to a floor of 1%.
- Score = (expected CTR − actual CTR) × impressions. In plain terms: roughly how many clicks a month you are missing on that query.
- It lists the top 20 by score and asks an AI model for five title suggestions per query, each under 60 characters.
Real CTR depends on the results page. A query with an AI Overview, ads, a map pack or a video carousel will have a low CTR at every position, and no title fixes that. Search the query yourself before you rewrite anything. If an AI Overview answers it, being cited there may matter more than the title; brand visibility and the AI Overview tracker cover that.
Run the analysis
- Open the toolGo to Analytics → Search Console → CTR opportunities and confirm the site. The dashed card lists the benchmarks and the score formula.
- Click Find OpportunitiesClick Find Opportunities. A message says how many gaps it found, or No significant CTR gaps found if your CTR is at or above the benchmarks.
- Read the tableEach row shows the Query, Pos, Actual CTR, Expected, Impressions and Score, sorted by score. Start at the top: that's where the most clicks are missing.
- Open the title suggestionsClick a row to see AI-Generated Meta Title Suggestions. If the AI step returned something unreadable you'll see No title suggestions available for this query; you were still charged for the run.
- Save your shortlistResults aren't stored on the page. Copy the queries, pages and the titles you like before you leave.
How to rewrite the title and description
The suggestions are prompted to be "highly clickable" and may lean on power words. Edit them until they are accurate: a title that promises more than the page delivers gets the click and loses the visitor. Good practice:
- Match the query's words and intent. If people search "aeo checklist", say *checklist*, not *guide*.
- Put the important words first and keep it short enough not to be cut off (around 60 characters is a common guide).
- Be specific. A real number, year or outcome beats an adjective, but only if it's true.
- Write the meta description too. The tool only suggests titles. Write one or two sentences that answer the query and say what the page offers. Google may rewrite either, but a relevant description is used more often.
- One page can rank for many queries. Pick the query with the highest score for that page, and make sure the new title doesn't drop words other important queries rely on.

Change the title and description, note the date, and wait two to four weeks. Then compare clicks for that page in the URL ranking analyzer with a custom before and after period. If you change the content too, you won't know which change worked.
