In shortThe AI bot tracker (the page is titled Visibility Analytics) shows traffic that a JavaScript tag on your site reports: visits referred by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, AI agents that run JavaScript, Google and direct visits, by page and country. Open AI search → Monitoring and reports → AI bot tracker, check the tag is live, pick a date range and read the cards and three tabs. It bills per 100 tracked requests and pauses at a zero balance.

What the AI bot tracker is for

Brand visibility tells you whether AI answers mention you. The AI bot tracker answers the next question: do those answers send anyone to your site? It shows how many visits came from AI assistants, which pages they landed on, and how that compares with Google and direct traffic over the same period.

Use it after you've won a few prompts or published content aimed at AI answers, to see whether real visits follow. It's also the source of the AI traffic numbers in Progress reports, where they appear as "AI crawler visits" although they are the same tag rows.

Read the next lesson before you trust the word "crawls"

Several cards use words like "crawls" and "indexing". The data comes from a JavaScript tag, and most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. Most "AI" rows are people who clicked a link in an AI answer, plus AI agents that run JavaScript. What the tracker counts explains this properly.

Before you start

  • A domain in your account. Without one, the page shows "No domain found" and an Add Domain button.
  • The tracking tag on your site. You get it on this page, from Tracking Setup. On WordPress, the AI Rank Lab plugin can add it for you. See Install the tracking tag.
  • A credit balance above zero. Tracking stops collecting when your balance reaches zero.

Step by step

  1. Open the trackerIn the sidebar go to AI search → Monitoring and reports → AI bot tracker. The page heading reads Visibility Analytics. It uses the domain selected in the top bar.
  2. Install and verify the tag if askedIf the domain isn't verified, the data is blurred behind Verification Required. Click Verify Domain to open Tracking Setup, copy the script (instructions for HTML, WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace are there), paste it before the closing </body> tag on every page, then click Verify Installation.
  3. Check the status barThe bar under the heading shows your domain and Tracking Active or Tracking Paused. Expand it with the arrow to see Coin Balance, Total Requests, Coins Used and Next Deduction. "Coins" is older wording for your normal credit balance.
  4. Pick a date rangeUse 7d, 14d, 30d or 90d, or set custom dates. The default is the last 30 days. Every card and tab follows this range.
  5. Read the five metric cardsTotal Traffic (everything the tag reported), LLM & AI (AI-detected rows and their share), Google (visits with a Google referrer), Direct / Ref (the rest of the non-AI traffic) and AI Visibility (the AI share again as a percentage).
  6. Work through the three tabsOverview & Sources has the daily chart, LLM & AI Engine Traffic by engine, Top Pages & Paths, Traffic Sources & Channels and Geographic Distribution. LLM Deep Dive lists pages per AI engine and a stream of recent AI rows with referrer and target page. Page Analytics breaks each page into human and AI visits, with filters and sorting.

How to read the numbers

  • Look at pages, not totals. The useful question is which pages AI assistants send people to. Those are the pages AI answers already link, so keep them accurate and current.
  • Read the referrer. In LLM Deep Dive, a row with a chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai referrer is a person who clicked through from an answer.
  • Treat the totals as events, not visitors. The tag sends a pageview when a page loads, an exit event when it closes, and another event when someone clicks a button such as "Sign up" or "Contact". Every one is stored and counted, so totals run higher than unique visits. Compare periods with each other; don't quote them as visitor counts.
  • "AI Bot" is a catch-all. When a browser's user agent contains words like "bot", "crawler" or "spider" but no known AI name, the row is labelled "AI Bot". That can include ordinary search or SEO crawlers that render JavaScript.
  • Countries are approximate. Country comes from a network header when available, otherwise from the browser's language setting, which is a weak signal. Visits with neither are shown as United States, so treat a large United States share with care.
  • The Live Tracking and Healthy badges are fixed labels. They show for every domain and don't check anything. The status bar's Tracking Active or Tracking Paused is the real signal.
A Verified badge doesn't prove the tag is live

If Verify Installation finds no recent visits, it creates a test visit on our side and checks again, so a domain can show verified before the tag is on your pages, and that test visit is counted in your totals. To be sure: open your site in a private window, click two or three pages, wait a minute, then refresh the tracker and look for those paths in Top Pages & Paths.

What it costs

Reading the tracker is free. Each request the tag sends counts towards billing, and one credit is taken each time your running total crosses a block of requests (see the table below). When your balance reaches zero the status bar switches to Tracking Paused and the tag stops collecting. Nothing is collected while paused and that gap can't be filled later. Tracking resumes on its own after you top up.

Keep a small buffer

A busy site sends a lot of requests. If you rely on these numbers for a client report, keep some credits in reserve so tracking doesn't pause mid-month and leave a gap in the chart.

Check yourself

1. Your domain shows Verified, but the tracker is empty after a day. What's the most likely explanation?
2. Why is Total Traffic higher than your real number of visitors?
3. What happens when your credit balance reaches zero?
