In shortHeatmaps show where visitors click and how far they scroll on each page of your site, drawn over a snapshot of the page. Tick Record Heatmaps for the domain in CRM and email → Setup → Tracking setup, wait for visits, then open Visitor behaviour → Heatmaps and pick a page. Heatmaps have no separate credit charge, but they need the tracking tag running.

What heatmaps are for

A heatmap answers two questions about a page at a glance. Clicks Map: what do people try to click, and do they click the thing you want them to? Scroll Depth: how many people reach your call to action, your pricing table or your form? Use heatmaps on your few most important pages, such as the home page, pricing, a top landing page and the page AI assistants send people to most.

UseWhen
HeatmapsYou want the pattern across many visits to one page
Session recordingsYou want to see one visitor's whole journey and what went wrong

Before you start

  • The tracking tag on your site, and Record Heatmaps ticked for the domain in Setup → Tracking setup. Click data is also collected while Record Sessions is on.
  • Some traffic. A heatmap built from a dozen visits is noise; wait until a page has a meaningful number of sessions before you change it.
  • A credit balance above zero, because the tag pauses at zero.

Step by step

  1. Open HeatmapsGo to CRM and email → Visitor behaviour → Heatmaps. The page is titled Visual Traffic Heatmaps and uses the domain selected in the switcher. If nothing has been collected yet, the page list says No session data yet. Install the tracking script to start collecting data.
  2. Pick a pageChoose a path from Tracked Pages, which is sorted by how much activity each page has. Type in Filter paths... to find one, or enter any path under Custom path (for example /pricing) and press the arrow.
  3. Switch between clicks and scrollClick Clicks Map to see click density over the page snapshot; hover a hot spot for detail. Click Scroll Depth to see how far down the page visitors got. Refresh reloads the data.
  4. Read the side panelTelemetry Summary shows Clicks and a second count labelled Visitors. In Scroll Depth mode, Scroll Depth Breakdown shows the share reaching 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the page. In Clicks Map mode, Top Clicked Elements ranks the buttons and inputs people clicked most.

How to read the result honestly

  • The page image is a snapshot. It is captured from a real visit. If you redesigned the page since, clicks may sit on top of elements that have moved. The frame says No page snapshot yet until a visit captures one.
  • All devices are mixed. Click positions are stored relative to the page's width and height, and phone and desktop clicks share one map. On a page whose mobile layout is very different, check Top Clicked Elements rather than trusting the position of each dot.
  • There is no date range. The map uses every stored session for the page, so before and after a redesign are combined.
  • "Visitors" is not people. It counts scroll readings, which are taken several times a second while someone scrolls, and the scroll breakdown is a share of those readings. Use it to compare sections of one page, not as an audience count.
Clicks on nothing are a signal

A hot spot on text or an image that isn't a link usually means visitors expect it to be clickable. Either make it a link or change its styling so it stops looking like one.

Pair it with a recording

When a heatmap shows something odd, such as heavy clicks on one form field, open Session recordings, filter Landing Page Path to the same page and watch two or three visits to see why.

Check yourself

1. What does the Visitors number in the heatmap's Telemetry Summary count?
2. You redesigned a page last week. Why might the click map look wrong?
3. Do heatmaps have their own credit charge?
