Add and research prompts
Type prompts, use AI Suggest or Prompt research, and choose the questions worth tracking.
In shortAdd prompts in AI search → Brand visibility → Prompt research. Type your own with Add Prompt, let AI Suggest propose questions based on your website, or use the separate AI Prompt Research page to turn keywords, a URL or a brainstorm into realistic questions for a chosen country and language. Track questions real buyers ask before they choose a product, worded the way people talk to AI.
Why the prompt list matters most
Every brand visibility number is an average over your prompts. If the prompts are questions nobody asks, or questions only your own customers would type ("is BrandName good?"), the numbers look great and mean little. A good prompt list covers the questions a buyer asks before they know you: comparisons, "best X for Y", alternatives, pricing and how-to questions in your category.
| Weak prompt | Better prompt | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AI Rank Lab review | Best tools to track brand mentions in ChatGPT for a small agency | Unbranded, so it shows whether AI picks you over others |
| SEO software | Which SEO tool helps me get cited in Google AI Overviews? | A full question, the way people talk to an assistant |
| CRM | Cheapest CRM for a 5-person real estate team | Specific audience and need, closer to a buying moment |
Your first visit: the setup wizard
If the selected domain has no prompts yet, Prompt research opens a Set up brand tracking wizard with three steps: Website (it reads your homepage to understand your brand and products), Prompts (it suggests questions customers might ask, and you can add your own) and Platforms (pick engines; ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity are ticked by default).
The wizard's suggestions are charged like AI Suggest. The last button, Start Tracking, saves your prompts and immediately runs every selected prompt on every selected platform, charged per engine. The wizard shows "N prompts × N platforms = N checks on your first run" so you can count before you click. It does not set up recurring checks. If your balance is short, the prompts are still saved and you can run them later.
Add prompts yourself
- Open Prompt researchIn the sidebar, go to AI search → Brand visibility → Prompt research. The page title is Brand Visibility Prompts. Make sure the right domain is selected in the domain selector at the top, because prompts belong to one domain.
- Click Add PromptFill in Prompt Text (the question, for example "What is the best tool for SEO analysis?"), an optional Intent (such as "product discovery"), a Category (pricing, features, comparisons, benefits, alternatives, how-to, reviews or other) and the Engines this prompt is meant for. Save it.
- Or click AI SuggestAI Suggest reads what AI Rank Lab knows about your brand and proposes questions you don't track yet. They appear in an AI Suggested Prompts panel. Click Add on the ones you want. You're charged for the suggestions once they're generated.
Research prompts for a market
For a bigger, more deliberate list, use AI Prompt Research at /dashboard/brand-visibility/ai-prompt-research. It isn't in the sidebar today, so bookmark it.
- Choose a methodFrom SEO Keywords turns your keywords (one per line, up to 20) into questions. From URL reads one page and finds the questions it could answer. Brainstorm AI works from your domain's niche alone.
- Set language and countryPick a Language and a Target Country Market. These shape the wording of the questions it writes.
- Generate and addClick Generate Search Prompts; the button shows the price. Review the results and click Add to Library on the ones worth tracking.
Researching for a country gives you questions written for that market. When those prompts later run on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity, the engines don't answer as if they were in that country. Put the place in the question itself ("in Melbourne", "in the UK") if location matters.
AI Prompt Research takes its price when you click Generate, before the prompts are written, and a failed generation isn't refunded. AI Suggest only charges after suggestions come back.
Choosing which prompts to keep
- Aim for 10 to 30 prompts per domain to start, across several categories.
- Keep most of them unbranded. Add a few branded ones to check how AI describes you.
- Write them the way a person would ask an assistant: a full question, often with an audience or constraint.
- Decide the wording before you run. Editing a prompt's text later can split its history.
- Delete prompts that turn out to be irrelevant. Deleting can't be undone.
